Piranha - Movie Review

SAN DIEGO - JULY 22: Actors Jerry O'Connell and Kelly Brook attend the 'Pirahna 3D' footage screening during Comic-Con 2010 at Regal Horton Plaza on July 22, 2010 in San Diego, California. (Photo by Michael Buckner/Getty Images for Weinstein Company)Piranha is one of those kinds of movies where human beings are predated upon by dangerous beings. In such movies, either the dangerous creatures invade human territory or humans venture into theirs and are preyed upon. What makes these creatures dangerous? Usually it is their extrordinary physical strength or their ability to sense things human beings cannot. The story develops with the humans and the predators attacking and counter-attacking each other.

In the movie Piranha, the story develops as a result of its human characters not showing enough maturity. The characters in the movie make immature decisions and get into trouble over and over again thereby creating a situation and the story tells us how the humans try to come out of the danger zone they got into.

The young man ignores his mom's order to babysit, bribes his siblings and goes to the Spring Break Party. The younger siblings ignore their brother's warning and go fishing. Let's forgive the kids. The scantily-clad young men and women ignore the cops' warning and start swimming in the lake. In the end, the group of humans assume they have killed all the piranhas and decide to have a small chat in the middle of the lake instead of showing the common sense to swim ashore only to invite another disaster.

Although the predators are the Piranhas, the story has been created by sucking common sense and maturity out of the brains of the movie's human characters.

The movie is being screened at Sridhar, Marine Drive Ernakulam.
